POSITION DESCRIPTION

LOCATION: Immigrant Welcome Centre of the Comox Valley

START DATE: Tuesday September 12, 2017 (runs September to June with the option to choose not to volunteer in this role with one month’s notice)

POSITION TITLE: Conversation Group Coordinator

REPORTS TO: Volunteer Coordinator

TYPE of VOLUNTEER: Core

 

TIME COMMITMENT:  Minimum 6 month time commitment preferred

The Coordinator will lead the Conversation Group typically two Fridays per month, 1pm-2:30pm

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Conversation Group is a program offered to clients of the Immigrant Welcome Centre that provides a safe space to practice conversational English. The Conversation Group Coordinator is responsible for facilitating a ninety minute discussion group for participants to practice and improve their English speaking skills while learning about Canadian culture. Duties include preparing simple lesson plans, addressing specific themes that will help participants adjust to life in Canada, and maintaining attendance records

Initiative: Identifying what needs to be done and doing it before being asked or before the situation requires it

 

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Inform and implement the Conversation Group’s program plan
  • Communicate with the other Conversation Group teachers and the Volunteer Coordinator about any questions, needs, or concerns
  • Coordinate and lead their (typically two) Friday sessions per month
  • Manage program budget and come up with creative uses of the budget that fit with the goals and scope of the Conversation Group and the mission and vision of the Immigrant Welcome Centre
  • Liaise with IWC staff to arrange for guest speakers, presentations, or information about community services and resources
  • Ensure that program participants and IWC staff are notified of cancellations and program changes
  • Refer attendees to the Immigrant Welcome Centre for additional support services
  • Record and report their volunteer hours

REQUIRED:

  • A valid BC driver’s license or valid BC government ID and reliable transportation
  • A Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check (performed by the Immigrant Welcome Centre for the volunteer)

PREFERRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor of Education and teaching experience
  • ESL instruction experience and or  training

REPORTS TO (Supervisor / Program):     Julie Kosolofski, Settlement Practitioner

TYPE of VOLUNTEER: Core / Part-Time

TIME COMMITMENT: Approximately 5 hours each month (excluding July and August)

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Immigrant Welcome Centre provides books and community information to eligible families. Our volunteer Storybook Collector will be responsible for bringing books from our community partner to the Immigrant Welcome Centre office and then calling participants to let them know the times that their books are available for pick up

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

August 2017:

  • Call list of participants provided by settlement staff. Confirm that the client is participating in the 2017-2018 program and note the ages of the children (as the books are distributed according to age category)
  • Contact the community partner and inform of the amount of book sets required for September. Arrange a fixed day and time to pick up the books from the community partner’s office each month. (For example, in  2016-2017, books were picked up the first Wednesday of every month)

September to June: (Monthly)

  • Pick up books from community partner’s office and drop off at the Immigrant Welcome Centre
  • Call the participants to let them know that their books are available for pick-up
  • Call the participants a second time as a reminder call for those who have not yet picked up their books
  • Count the amount of book sets not picked up and provide the community partner the adjusted number of books requested for the next monthly pick up

 

REQUIRED

  • Personable and able to develop positive rapport with individuals while maintaining a strong sense of professionalism
  • Must be able to speak clearly on the phone
  • Must complete a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check (provided by the Immigrant Welcome Centre at no charge to the volunteer)
  • Must have a valid BC Driver’s license and reliable transportation
